Abstract
Today, the trend of cosmetic surgery, as a natural trend, is tied to the social phenomenon of "body politics". In fact, the trend towards beauty in connection with medical science has appeared in the form of "body manipulation and surgery" and in connection with human society in the form of differentiation. One of the manifestations of this trend is the large number of cosmetic surgeries among the youth in the country. Considering the main goal of this research is the sociological explanation of the tendency towards cosmetic surgery among the students of Yazd University and Yazd Medical Sciences. This research is based on the theories of Giddens, Bourdieu, Goffman, Veblen and Feminist. The target sample size is 661 students of Yazd University and Shahid Sadoughi University of Medical Sciences, Yazd. The descriptive findings of the research showed that 33.37% of all respondents studied had a tendency towards cosmetic surgery. The results also showed that there is a significant difference between the average respondents according to the type of university (medical sciences compared to Yazd University) and gender (women). The results of Pearson's correlation showed that the variables of normative pressures, cultural capital, consumerism and lifestyle have a positive relationship and the variable of body perception has a negative and significant relationship with the tendency to cosmetic surgery. As a result, it can be acknowledged that today, with medical advances and attention to the body as the most important element of identity formation and demonstration and efforts to standardize body ideals, we are witnessing growing interests in the field of body modification and change.
