Abstract

Interactions, social networks and social trust among students and professors are one of the most important academic social capital. This study aims to investigate the effect of social capital on the academic performance of postgraduate students at the University of Mazandaran.
The statistical population of the study consisted of all postgraduate students at the University of Mazandaran in the academic year 2016-17. The survey method was used in the study and the data were collected through a questionnaire. The research sample included 358 participants who were selected by simple random sampling.
The findings of the study demonstrated that the variable of social capital accounted for 36.9% of variance in academic performance. Also, the results of regression models showed that the variables of informal social network (β = 0.45) and social trust (β = 0.39) affected academic performance (educational and research performance). The adjusted determination coefficient indicated that the independent variables of this study i.e. the informal social network and social trust explained 0.344% of the variance in the dependent variable i.e. the academic performance. Based on the findings, it can be stated that increasing social capital will lead to the development of the performance of the educational and research system.
