By challenging the prevailing narrative that conceptualizes modernity as an epistemic and historical rupture, this study undertakes a genealogical investigation into the structural continuities between the fundamental indicators of civilizational archetypes and the pillars of the modern epoch. In contrast to paradigms positing modernity as a radical severance from pre-existing traditions, this research argues that core tenets of modernity have profoundly assimilated structural and theological influences from these historical antecedents. To systematically investigate this premise, three pivotal indicators are critically analyzed: scientific rationality, contextualized through the philosophical lens of Maimonides; modern capitalism, examined in light of Werner Sombart’s theoretical contributions; and the rule of law, emphasizing the self-governing community model and Carl Schmitt’s jurisprudential reading. Employing a qualitative methodology rooted in historical-comparative analysis, this inquiry operates within the theoretical frameworks of historical dialectics and intertextuality. The findings elucidate that while modernity is undeniably a product of Europe’s specific material and historical milieus, the genesis of its foundational concepts is inextricably bound to deep, and occasionally paradoxical, ties with prior theological traditions. Ultimately, this research concludes that modernity does not signify a definitive rupture, but rather constitutes a secular rearticulation and reinterpretation of a theological civilizational matrix. By illuminating the inherent paradox regarding the religious genealogy of ostensibly secular indicators, this study underscores the imperative of conceptualizing modernity as an evolutionary and dialectical progression within the broader trajectory of civilizational history.
